Virginia & Washington DC Maps on Microfilm
The University of Virginia Library owns only two original sets of Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, both of them depicting Charlottesville, Virginia, dated 1907 and 1920. The volumes are on deposit in the Special Collections Department.
However, microfilm versions of all known Sanborn Maps of Virginia cities and towns and the District of Columbia are available from the Government Information Resources area of Alderman Library. These microfilm reels are black and white images of the original maps. Two separate sets of microfilm are available, which were photographed from different sources.
Microfilm provided by Chadwyck-Healy (labeled "CH" in the index) make up the bulk of these materials. These reels depict maps deposited with and held by the Library of Congress to establish copyright. Over 11,000 map sheets for 129 cities and towns are available on 18 reels for Virginia. Most maps on these reels pre-date 1950.
Microfilm provided by University Publications of American (labeled "UPA" in the index) make up the remainder of the microfilm collection. These maps were photographed from sources and archives other than the Library of Congress, including the archives of the Sanborn Map Company itself. Over 5,000 maps sheets for 70 cities and town are available on 11 reels. These maps may overlap slightly with the CH collection, but generally do not. Many will post-date 1950, allowing for a more modern view of many cities.
