County Business Patterns

The County Business Patterns data base provides county, state, and national level business data from 1977 to the most recent year available. Statistics include number of establishments, payroll (annual and 1st quarter), number of employees, and number of establishments by size class for 2 digit SIC industry groupings. The data is collected annually by the Bureau of the Census.

The CD-ROMS as issued by the Census Bureau contain data down to the 4 digit SIC level. CD-ROMs containing 4 digit SIC data for 1986-1997 are available for selection by over 1400 depository libraries. Beginning in 1998, data are tabulated by industry as defined in the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). These CD-ROMs are also available through the depository library system.

Due to the way the data is collected by the Census Bureau, it is possible to create a request where a combination of area, SIC or NAICS code, and year produces no resulting records. In that event, the system will return a blank report

The Census Bureau also provides access to County Business Patterns data from 1993 through the most current data available that can be displayed and downloaded.

1997 NAICS and 1987 SIC Correspondence Tables are available from the US Census Bureau
